Commissioner Carollo Takes Immediate Action on Longstanding Community Issues in Recent Meeting

In a recent meeting, Commissioner Joe Carollo introduced several initiatives focused on addressing critical community concerns. Following the redistricting changes on July 8th, which now place all condos west of Brickell Avenue in District 3, this introductory meeting served as an opportunity to discuss key issues affecting Brickell. The conversation covered a variety of topics, including public safety, noise control, and short term rentals.

Increase in Police Staffing

Commissioner Carollo stressed the urgent need for additional police officers to ensure the safety of the area’s growing population. He requested his team and law enforcement to review the budget and look into two more officers, while acknowledging that even more may be necessary to fully meet the community's needs. This has been a longtime request and were are proud to see it moving one step closer to the finish line.

Crackdown on Noise Pollution

Noise pollution, particularly from loud cars, was another major topic of discussion. The BHA brought up and requested the implementation of decibel volume cameras. These devices, similar to the ones on Miami Beach, would help enforce noise regulations more effectively and provide relief to residents disturbed by excessive vehicle noise.

Boat Dock at the top of the River

The Commissioner also voiced his support for the installation of a boat dock at the top of the river. He is committed to securing funding for the project and encouraged police representatives to explore practical ways to make the dock a reality. Sergeant Mesa, Commander Valdez, and Major Sierra, who were present at the meeting, are working closely with city officials to move the project forward.

Potential Change to 5am Alcohol Sales on Sundays

In an effort to address concerns about late-night disturbances, the BHA raised the possibility of changing the closing time for alcohol sales on Sundays. The proposed adjustment would request alcohol sales to end at 3 AM instead of the current 5 AM on Sundays. While the Commissioner is open to this change, he emphasized the need for public input led by the neighbors.

Disruption of Neighborhoods

Many residents have expressed frustration with the disruption caused by short-term rentals, citing issues like noise, overcrowded units, and a lack of accountability from temporary tenants. Commissioner Carollo acknowledged these concerns and reaffirmed his commitment to finding solutions that protect the quality of life for permanent residents. His office is looking into this issue.

The meeting highlighted Commissioner Carollo’s dedication to addressing the community’s most pressing issues, and we appreciate the steps he has already taken. Residents can look forward to additional updates on these initiatives in the near future.
