Redistricting in District 2
During yesterday's special commission meeting, the BHA requested it’s own commissioner to care for it’s growing concerns. During the proposed plan the district would be encroached by District 1, 3 and District 5. The data showed that District 2, which includes most of Miami’s coastal neighborhoods stretching from Coconut Grove up through Brickell, downtown and Edgewater and Morningside, grew so much that it was overpopulated compared to other districts.
To even things out, De Grandy took western swaths of Miami’s coastal neighborhoods and moved them into abutting districts to the west. Under the proposal, District 1 would extend further east along the Miami River, District 3 would add a sliver of Brickell southeast of The Roads, District 4 would absorb part of the West Grove and District 5 would add Midtown, among other changes. The Miami Herald reported here.
BHA Public Comment:
Commissioner Russell, as you know we are constantly working with your office and we have a long list of issues in our community. Given the issues that we are facing, it would benefit us to have our own Commissioner. Brickell is a vertical cities which brings great benefit to the City of Miami but we often feel that the issues that come with living in a vertical city are left to the buildings and its management. For example the streets by the Axis 11th and 1st have a lot potholes due to construction, we need more crosswalks and police enforcement of pedestrian safety, we need more trash cans, enforcement of dog poo, traffic lights with pedestrian signs, and a better management of the traffic lights synchronized with the Brickell Bridge. Better care of the streets when a building is being built like Una construction and so on.
This is not to say that the City isn’t of help, this is to point out that the issues are numerous and we need additional resources into a highly populated area. Again, please consider giving Brickell it’s own commissioner. Thank you for your service.
What are you opinions? As always we will keep you up to date on all things Brickell!
